The Perfect Monterey Getaway

Who doesn’t need a mini getaway after the craziness of the holidays?! I know I did! My boyfriend Andrew and I decided to spend some quality time together before he goes back to L.A on Monday. He started his (long..very long) medical school journey in May and we’ve been long-distance ever since. These past two weeks have been the longest he’s been home since, so this little getaway was much needed!

Monterey is the perfect weekend spot for those of you who like the beach and overcast weather. We decided to splurge and stay at the Monterey Plaza HotelΒ and woo wee was it nice! Probably one of the nicest hotels I’ve ever stayed at but it surprisingly didn’t break the bank! We had a “mid-week January” special rate for $159 plus taxes and fees but for the quality of the place, it was wellllll worth it. We were celebrating our belated anniversary (our two year anniversary was in November) and mentioned it in the comments while booking the hotel online. When we checked in at the front desk, they wished us a happy anniversary and upgraded us to a partial-ocean view room and $20 voucher to use at the hotel restaurant or room-service (so nice!).

When we opened the door to “our” room, to our surprise, there was another guest’s belongings spread out all across the bed (whoops). We immediately shut the door and went downstairs to tell the front desk. They were extremely apologetic and upgraded us to a partial-ocean balcony room for their mistake. Apparently they had a fluke in the system? We didn’t really mind since no one was in the room at the time but if there would have been…that could have been extremely awkward.

The hotel provides complimentary bikes to their guests to rent from across the street (normally $25/day per person). There is a beautiful bike trail along the ocean. If you go, you have to use the bikes, it’s a blast and you get your work out in. πŸ˜‰ We rode to a nearby brewery called “Fieldwork Brewing Company.” It’s main location is in Berkeley so this one was more of an outside pop-up one. Still fun to check out.

The hotel also has a complimentary happy hour from 4:00-5:00pm with wine, cheese and crackers. We didn’t know about it until we saw all the guests sipping on wine but were pleasantly surprised and joined in! We earned it after that bike ride, right?! The other great thing about this hotel is the jacuzzi’s on the top floor of one of the hotel buildings, with a stunning view of the ocean. We went when it was too dark out to see, but if we were to go back again, I’d like to go at sunset!

The location of the hotel is fantastic and Cannery Row and the Monterey Bay Aquarium are only a couple blocks away. Bring your walking shoe’s because there’s tons of restaurants and shops nearby. We went to Wave Street Cafe for breakfast, which was delicious and had a pretty view of the ocean. We also went to Sea Harvest Fish Market & Restaurants for lunch and had a yummy meal. It’s more of a fish market with a restaurant inside so it’s very low-key and casual but has super fresh fish!

Overall, our experience at the Monterey Plaza Hotel was great and we’d definitely go back again, especially with the rate we got. Hopefully next time, we won’t walk into somebody else’s room. πŸ˜‰

Xoxo, Nat
