I am officially a member of the middle-twenties club (I’m not sure how I feel about this). I just climbed into bed after a jam-packed but super fun weekend celebrating! Starting on Friday, I spent the day in Sonoma with my parents to start the celebrations off right..with wine! It was my first time in Sonoma and I loved it. There are SO many good restaurants and wineries. If you’re a foodie like me or like wine, you have to go! Make sure you stop by El Dorado Hotel & Kitchen in Sonoma Plaza for some Truffle Fries…they will change your life. Sonoma Plaza has amazing restaurants and quaint shops to look through. Fun fact, the first Williams Sonoma was in the Sonoma Plaza…now I understand the name! I had to make a visit in and bought an adorable cheese board as a memento. We went to dinner at Tasca Tasca and had a variety of Portuguese tapas to share. The atmosphere was cozy and the food was delicious (reasonably priced too)! Order the pork sliders and crab empanadas for the table, you won’t regret it.
On Saturday, I flew to L.A to continue the birthday celebrations with Andrew. I fly on Southwest to L.A about once a month and I recently got TSA Pre-check…best decision ever. TSA pre-check allows for you to skip the dreadful security lines and you don’t have to take your shoes off or take your laptop out of your bag…such a breeze! TSA Pre-check is $85 and lasts 5 years. If you travel a lot, look into it!
I’m usually the one who is the planner in my and Andrew’s relationship but since it was my birthday, he decided that he wanted to take the reigns and plan everything..without giving me any clues. But the guy did GOOD. We went to Upper West in Santa Monica for dinner and I would give it 5 stars on Yelp if I actually did reviews on there. The restaurant atmosphere was so cozy and the owner at the front was very personable as he greeted us (there is also valet up front so we didn’t have to deal with crazy L.A parking). It’s Restaurant Week in L.A from January 12-26 where local restaurants offer reduced pricing for a prix-fixe menu to promote lunch and dinner specials! So basically, my birthday date hit the jack pot. We enjoyed a delicious three-course meal (we were given 3 options per course) for $39 each and I’m telling you – the food was incredible! We also each had a couple of cocktails for $6 per drink, since their $6 happy hour lasts until 7pm. So basically, you need to hop on Google right now and search, “restaurant week near me” and find a local restaurant to check out when Restaurant Week comes to your area!
One other highlight from the weekend was going to Smorgasburg in Downtown L.A. It’s this huge market with all types of amazing food vendors — from Vegan to BBQ and any other type of food you could think of. Andrew and I shared the lobster truffle fries….omg. I had truffle fries twice this weekend but they were worth every greasy calorie. Smorgasburg L.A is open every Sunday and is usually from 10am-4pm. Make sure you go early because we went towards the end and a lot of the vendors were sold out. Also, bring cash!
So by now, you should be able to tell that I’m a total foodie since the highlights from my birthday weekend were all surrounded by restaurants and food (what good birthday isn’t?!) But hey, life is short, eat the cake.
